Actor

Chadwick Boseman

1976–2020

A king on screen and in life—who played heroes while quietly fighting for his own.

Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born on November 29, 1976, in Anderson, South Carolina. He studied directing at Howard University and worked steadily in theater and television before a remarkable run of biographical roles: Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get On Up, and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. But it was his portrayal of T'Challa in Black Panther that made history—the film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon for Black audiences who had never seen themselves as the center of a superhero epic. He visited hospitalized children in Marvel costume while undergoing chemotherapy, a fact kept private until his death. Boseman died of colon cancer on August 28, 2020, having filmed four Marvel films after his diagnosis without public disclosure. He was 43.
