Basketball Legend

Kobe Bryant

1978–2020

The Black Mamba—whose obsessive pursuit of greatness became the defining standard for a generation.

Kobe Bean Bryant was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The son of an NBA player, he entered the league straight from high school at 17, was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, and spent 20 years redefining what elite looked like. Five NBA championships, two Finals MVP awards, one regular season MVP, 18 All-Star selections, and an Oscar for the animated short Dear Basketball. His 81-point game in 2006 stands as the second-highest single-game scoring performance in NBA history. But the 'Mamba Mentality'—the relentless, almost pathological commitment to improvement—became his true legacy. It influenced athletes across every sport. He was building a second career as a storyteller and investor when he, his daughter Gianna, and seven others died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020.

In Their Words
“The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.”
“I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success.”
Legacy & Impact

Elevated the standard of competitive excellence in professional basketball and built a post-athletic career that was just beginning to show its full ambition.
