Virgil Abloh

1980–2021

The architect-turned-designer who dismantled fashion's gatekeeping by treating quotation marks as a design philosophy.

Virgil Abloh was born on September 30, 1980, in Rockford, Illinois, to Ghanaian immigrant parents. He studied civil engineering and architecture before pivoting to fashion through an internship with Fendi alongside Kanye West. In 2013 he founded Off-White, a streetwear label that placed ironic quotation marks on everyday objects—a convention that was mocked and then copied everywhere. In 2018 he became the first Black artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear division, one of the most prestigious positions in luxury fashion. He designed across architecture, graphic design, art installations, and DJ sets, insisting that creativity had no hierarchy. He was privately battling cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare cancer, for two years before his death on November 28, 2021, at 41. He never slowed down. His last Louis Vuitton show was staged a month before he died.

In Their Words
“I'm definitely a working class kid from the midwest who just believed in this idea that everything is open to re-interpretation.”
“Three percent of something is better than a hundred percent of nothing.”
Legacy & Impact

Broke fashion's racial and cultural gatekeeping by making streetwear intellectually serious, and proved that a Black designer from the Midwest could lead the world's most prestigious luxury house.
